<image:caption>Ahoy! The year is 1713, and the Golden Age of Piracy is slowly drawing to a close, as the British, French, and Spanish navies systematically hunt down pirates all over Caribbean. In hopes of delaying their destruction, a group of the remaining pirate captains has occupied the port town of New Providence on the island of Nassau, and over the course of several years they have built an independent pirate republic, governed loosely, but democratically, by a council of pirate captains. The fledgling republic is dangerous, but radically free. You and your fellow pirate captains sustain New Providence by raiding trade ships and vulnerable port towns, but as a result, your lawlessness has attracted the ire of the great European powers (especially the feared British Royal Navy). With such great odds stacked against you, will infighting and lack of cooperation spell out destruction for the republic? Or will you and your fellow captains band together, and secure a future of freedom and riches for the pirates of New Providence?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet our Secretariat - Secretary-General</image:title>
<image:caption>Stella is a Senior enrolled in a Dual BA Program Between Sciences Po and Columbia University. She spent the first two years of college in France studying political science and is spending her Junior and Senior years in New York studying economics. She discovered Model UN as a Senior in high school and has been unable to stop ever since. As this year’s Secretary-General, Stella wishes to see CESIMS thrive and is thankful to all schools and students who make this conference meaningful and successful. She is also a member of Columbia’s Model UN Travel Team. When she isn’t doing MUN, you can find her complaining about American bread, painting to forget how much work she has to do, or simply in Butler library having an existential crisis. For questions or concerns, you can reach her at secretary.general@cesims.org</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kinza is a Junior at Barnard College majoring in Economics and Social History. While most of her coursework has been focused on South Asia, she’s also interested in studying migration to the United States and other international relations topics. Fittingly, she has begun working with the United States Mission to the United Nations this Fall. She’s been involved with CESIMS since her freshman year, and she had the opportunity to host a truly magical Harry Potter committee last Fall. When she is not in class or working on CESIMS, she is usually binge-watching youtube videos or eagerly awaiting the return of Vine. You may reach her at ksh2142@barnard.edu.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jasmine is a junior in Columbia College studying political science and history, concentrating in international politics and East Asian history. Having been involved with CESIMS since her freshman year, she has truly appreciated the growth of the program and has loved every second of her time working on the conference and the education program. Jasmine is also a member of Columbia’ s Model UN travel team, staffs the other conferences hosted by Columbia, and is a senior editor for the Blue and White, an undergraduate magazine, as her token non-MUN activity. When not buried under a veritable mountain of reading for her classes, she enjoys watching movies and eating Korean food with her friends. You can reach her at jp3656@columbia.edu.</image:caption>

His Model UN journey began as the sole nervous Freshman in his high school’s team interest meeting. From there, he expanded the program across his school and several others in the district, bringing civic engagement across the great city of Nashville. Jackson is also an active member of Columbia’s travel Model UN team, as well as a staff writer for the travel publication Now!Here. He is currently majoring in Political Science and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and he hopes to enter the world of diplomacy and politics someday. To him, MUN has always seemed like a logical extension of his experience overseas. As Undersecretary-General for Public Relations, he liaises with schools and individuals to make sure they have the best experience at CESIMS. Lucas has also been a member of Columbia's MUN Travel Team since freshman year. Some of his other interests include working for startups (or dabbling with founding his own) and alpine skiing. <image:caption>Greg is a Sophomore in Columbia College studying Biochemistry, Physics, and Biotechnology. How did a Super STEM major find his way to Model UN, you ask? At the Mississippi school for mathematics and science, he got involved with Model UN very early on and has enjoyed all of the fun that comes with discussing and debating interesting topics with his peers. Greg will be serving as one of the USGs of Education and also serves on a plethora of other boards on and off campus, and he is really elated to see you all. Greg believes that STEM majors can actively participate and fall in love with MUN, just as he has. Greg also enjoys snakes and long walks on the beach. <image:title>Greenlandic Independence</image:title>
<image:caption>How will 2021 go down in history? It’s up to you to decide. A committee of Greenlandic, Danish, and foreign actors have gathered to discuss Greenland’s path towards independence this year, a year some Greenlandic politicians have proposed for independence, and the 300th anniversary of Danish colonization. An autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland (Kalaallit) has gained increasing autonomy—politically and economically—under the Self-Government Act of 2009, which also allows for full Greenlandic sovereignty. Despite Greenlandic and Danish support for independence, questions of economic viability give pause. As climate change reveals new sectors and foreign interest in the Arctic region increases (particularly from China, Russia, and the U.S.), any moves toward independence from Denmark are sure to not only have global ramifications—but also to evoke global input and engagement. The future of Greenland is in your hands. How, when, and on whose terms will Greenlandic independence come about?</image:caption>

      <image:title>UN Human Rights Council</image:title>
<image:caption>On March 28, 2019, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced that humanity only has eleven years left before the effects of climate change become irreversible. However, for many of the most vulnerable communities around the world, the effects of man-made global warming have already been suffered. Small island micro-states are threatened by rising sea levels; agriculture-reliant countries in the global South are finding it more difficult to grow crops; water is becoming a scarce resource in the desert. This situation raises the question of environmental justice that the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) must address. How can the United Nations create a climate change Agenda that more thoroughly incorporates the situation and needs of these communities? And should the United Nations interpretation of human rights be altered to include this sort of justice, not only for these vulnerable groups, but for future generations as well? Delegates, the choice is up to you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The United Nations General Assembly Third Committee focuses its attention on the human rights of social, humanitarian and cultural issues around the world. This committee will have to work together to find effective ways to help those who feel at a disadvantage. Specifically, during CESIMS, the committee will explore the rights of women and children, and racial and economic disparities. Throughout the day, there will be two topics that come together. Topic A will discuss the safety of families living in war zones. The delegates will look at wars from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East and work together to protect the safety of the innocent people caught in these war zones. Topic B will regard the same countries but will focus on child labor laws within the cultural societies. Delegates will have to incorporate global conflict between using children to grow the economy, as many countries will have their own beliefs and needs. Delegates, it is up to you to generate good discussion and collaborate to find effective solutions to these pressing global issues.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Maravi Empire Convenes, 16th Century</image:title>
<image:caption>Southeast Africa, the late 16th century. The Maravi empire is on the cusp of consolidating its power. Three kingdoms make up the young empire, which boasts territory spanning from the coast of Moçambique to the banks of the Luangwa River. But attaining primacy in this fast-paced and ever-changing region is no easy feat— the ivory-hungry Portuguese linger on the other side of the Zambezi River, varied rain-making spiritual authorities battle for influence, and the peoples the Maravi now rule still remember what life was like without their overlords. Strange spirits lurk in the forest and the scent of change blows in from the south. This meeting of Maravi elders must chart the empire’s path into the new century—will the Maravi Empire flourish, or be overcome?</image:caption>

      <image:title>US Constitutional Convention 2100</image:title>
<image:caption>The year is 2100, and in the United States of America, change is long overdue. The past century has seen wide-spread instability caused by erratic ideological swings in government exacerbated by congressional gridlock and an inability for the system to respond well to change. Boiling underneath this tension is the unrest of the citizens, who feel that their voices are not being heard and their votes do not matter. With the last constitutional amendment being ratified in 1992, multiple large scale prolonged civilian marches having occurred over the last year, and with widespread dissatisfaction and distrust of the upcoming Presidential election, states have decided to send their own delegations to New York City to draft a new constitution independent of Congress. You will be one of these delegates, representing your state to the best of your ability, and it is up to you to find a way to bring America into the 22nd century. Will you be able to resolve the issues currently facing America, or will the 2096 election be America’s last?</image:caption>

<image:title>Warlords of Taishan: Tales of the Dogmeat General Republic China 1928</image:title>
<image:caption>The Warlord Era of Republican China is a time of great chaos, when Bastards and Bandits (and sometimes both) make history. Zhang Zongchang is no exception, or rather, all the exceptions. In 1925, Zhang conquered the province of Shandong, only to be rudely displaced by the Kuomintang. In 1929, Zhang returned to Shandong, ready for a rematch along with YOU, members of his entourage and general staff. Against you are arrayed not only a disgusted populace, but a mysterious religious revival and the professional Nationalist army led by Zhang’s former right-hand-man Liu Zhennian. You must utilize all your backhand dealings and popular support to accumulate Zhang’s political and financial capital, rebuild the warlord state, and defend it from the National Government’s inevitable attempts at reconquest.</image:caption>
